Dateline Portland: Finally, someone has a clue about the arts in education. Go Portland.

Finally, some good news about education in this country. Portland Oregon is set to approve the opening, in 2011, of a new high school, fully accredited within the city's public school system, and free, which will have as its focus the musical arts - in particular the modern recording arts. While adhering to state and federal standards in the traditional curricula, the proposed school's organization, mission, and day to day structure (drawing upon existing models in Minneapolis and California) appears radically non-traditional, with an emphasis on creativity, mixed-age learning, project-based teamwork, and an overall respect for music as an intrinsic part of education, vocational preparation, personal and global interaction, and individual fulfillment. Kudos to the organizers at HSRAP. The proposal goes before the full public school's committee on Monday, December 13.
